Auto captions for OBS replay buffer clips
Press your replay key in game. Substrike sees the new clip, captions it on your PC, and puts it in a dated folder, ready to post. No hours of footage to scrub through.
How it works with the replay buffer
- Turn on OBS’s replay buffer and set a hotkey. Clips usually save to OBS’s Recording Path, so check that folder after your first save.
- Point Substrike’s watch folder at it. There is a one click switch to OBS’s folder. A whole drive is refused, and Stop watching keeps your folder.
- Play. Every clip OBS finishes saving is queued and captioned while Substrike is open. The list is saved as it runs, so a crash or restart costs nothing, and one failed clip never stops the rest.
- Check, then post. Substrike points out the words the speech model was unsure of, and holds clips with real doubts in a check folder. Review words steps through only those words. The rest go to a dated Captioned folder.
Mic, friends and game on their own tracks
If you record the mic, Discord and the game on separate OBS tracks, Substrike can caption only the voices and keep the game audio in the export. From 1.0.7 you can also turn a track up or down, or mute it, and the preview and the export use the same mix. Not only OBS

Things to know
- It listens rather than watches. A silent play gets no captions, and a clip with no speech gets no file.
- Names, slang and game jargon are the most common misses. A names list and find and replace rules fix most of them for good.
- Windows 10 or 11, 64 bit, only. See good to know and the requirements.
Can Substrike caption my OBS replay buffer clips automatically?
Yes. Point the watch folder at the folder where OBS saves its replay buffer clips, and leave Substrike open. Each clip saved after you start watching is queued and captioned as OBS finishes saving it.
Where does OBS save replay buffer clips?
In OBS’s Recording Path on the Output settings page, usually. OBS’s own guides do not spell that out, so check the folder after saving your first replay. Substrike has a one click switch to OBS’s folder.
Do I have to keep Substrike open?
Yes. The watch folder picks up clips saved after watching starts, while Substrike is open. Use a separate output folder so exports are not watched too.
Where do the captioned clips go?
From version 1.0.7, each session goes into one dated Captioned folder, for example Captioned\2026-10-03, so they are easy to find at the end of the night. Clips with real doubts, such as broken timing or a lot of unsure words, go in a check folder for you to look at. A clip with no speech gets no file.
Will it caption my friends in Discord separately from the game?
Yes, if OBS records them on their own audio tracks. OBS can record your mic, Discord and the game as separate tracks, and Substrike can caption only the voice tracks while keeping the game audio in the export. If everything is on one track it still works, but the voices cannot be picked apart from the game sound.
How accurate are the captions?
About 81 in 100 words right on 30 clips of gaming voice chat, from one friend group, checked by the owner. That is a small test, and clean single speaker speech is not measured yet. Confident mistakes are not pointed out, so watch a clip through before posting anything important. The method is on the proof page.
Does it upload my clips?
No. Captioning runs on your PC. The privacy notice lists every connection the app makes.
