Discord voice chat
Captions for Discord voice chat in your clips
The best part of a clip is what your friends said. Without captions, that is lost on anyone scrolling with the sound off. Substrike captions the voice chat on your PC, gives each friend their own colour, and remembers the voices you name.
How to set it up
- Give Discord its own audio track. OBS can record your mic, Discord and the game as separate tracks. The app has a short OBS setup guide for audio tracks.
- Point Substrike’s watch folder at your clips folder, and leave Substrike open. Each new clip saved there is queued and captioned automatically.
- Play. When the voices are on their own track, Substrike captions just the voices and keeps the game audio in the export.
- Name your friends once. Voices are grouped automatically. Name a friend and choose Remember, and their voice is labelled in later clips.
Each friend in their own colour
Every speaker gets their own colour, and their own lane on the timeline. If the count of voices is wrong, you can correct it in one click.
Living captions and Discord voices
Your friends’ big moments still grow on screen. Discord voices arrive as mono, so their captions stay centred while the size follows the volume. Voices with a left and a right slide to their side.
Everything on one track?
Still captioned. Speaker colours work best with voices on their own track, and if game sound or crosstalk adds a wrong or extra speaker, one click on the timeline fixes it.
Back to your server
Export sized for Discord, TikTok, Shorts, Reels or YouTube, with 7 caption styles and word by word animation. Set up Send to Discord once, then send any export with one click.
Not only OBS
Substrike works on saved video files, so the watch folder also takes clips from NVIDIA (ShadowPlay or the NVIDIA App), AMD, Steam Game Recording, Xbox Game Bar and Medal. Whether those keep Discord on its own track depends on the recorder’s own audio settings. See captions for OBS replay clips and captions for NVIDIA ShadowPlay clips.
Things to know
- It listens rather than watches. A clip with no speech gets no file.
- Names, slang and game jargon are the most common misses. A names list and find and replace rules fix many of them.
- 64 bit Windows 11. Windows 10 should work but is not tested yet. See good to know and the requirements.
Can Substrike caption my friends in Discord separately from the game?
Yes, if your recorder keeps Discord on its own audio track. Substrike can caption only the voices and keep the game audio in the export. If everything is on one track it still works, but the voices cannot be picked apart from the game sound.
Does each friend get their own caption colour?
Yes. Voices are grouped automatically and each speaker gets their own colour. Name a friend once and choose Remember, and their voice is labelled in later clips. If a voice is ever grouped wrong, one click on the timeline fixes it.
Why don’t the captions move towards my friends’ voices?
Living captions slide towards a voice only when the audio has a left and a right. Discord voices arrive as mono, so for them only the size follows loudness.
Can I send the captioned clip back to Discord?
Yes. Export sized for Discord, set up Send to Discord once, then send any export with one click.
Does it upload our voice chat?
No. Captioning runs on your PC. Files leave it only if you post to Discord or send us a clip for support. The privacy notice lists every connection the app makes.
