Steam Game Recording
Add captions to Steam Game Recording clips
Steam saves your recordings in its own format. From version 1.0.7, Substrike opens them directly, finds the moments you marked, and exports captioned clips for TikTok, Shorts, Reels or Discord.
What happens when you add a Steam recording
Steam Game Recording does not save a normal video file. It saves many small pieces and a session.mpd file. Substrike reads it for you, without re-encoding, and keeps every audio track the recording has.
- Add the folder. Pick your gamerecordings folder in the app, or point the watch folder at it.
- Substrike makes a playable copy. It is kept in the app’s own cache. Your Steam files are left alone, and Substrike never writes its Captioned folder inside Steam’s recordings folder.
- Your markers become highlights. A marker you pressed in game, or an achievement, becomes one of the first highlights, with a little time kept before and after it.
- Caption and export. Substrike listens to the speech on your PC, shows you the few words it was unsure of, and exports the clip with captions burned in.
One thing to know about audio
Our own Steam clips came with a single audio track, and Steam’s help page does not mention a separate mic track. So expect your voice, your friends and the game to be mixed together. Captions still work, but game sound and overlapping voices can cause a missed or wrong word. Names and game jargon are the most common misses. The good to know page says what the word check catches and what it does not.
Fit the clip to where it is going
From 1.0.7, a size and fit meter shows how full your size limit is before you export, with a one click switch to the next size that fits. Without a size limit the estimate is a rough range, a guess from a small number of test clips.
Can Substrike caption Steam Game Recording clips?
Yes, from version 1.0.7. Add your Steam recordings folder, or point the watch folder at it, and Substrike reads each recording directly. You do not need to export it from Steam first.
Where are my Steam recordings?
Pick the folder named gamerecordings. Steam keeps it in its userdata folder unless you chose another place in Steam’s Game Recording settings. The app can suggest the folders it finds on your PC.
Does Substrike change my Steam files?
No. Steam saves a recording as many small pieces plus a session.mpd file. Substrike turns each recording into a normal video in its own cache when it adds it, without re-encoding, and leaves Steam’s files untouched.
Do my Steam markers and achievements show up?
Yes, from version 1.0.7. Markers you press in game and achievements become the first highlights for that recording, labelled Steam marker or Steam achievement, ahead of the moments found by sound.
Can it caption my mic and my friends separately?
Not from the Steam recordings we have seen. Our own Steam clips came with a single audio track, and Steam’s help page does not mention a separate mic track, so expect everything mixed together. If your recorder keeps voices on their own tracks, such as OBS, the app can caption only those.
Does it upload my recordings?
No. Captioning runs on your PC. The privacy notice lists every connection the app makes.
Using OBS as well? See captions for OBS replay buffer clips. Everything the app does is on the how it works page.
